Bolivian Coup Attempt Foiled

General Juan José Zúñiga, commander of the Bolivian Army, attempted a coup détat on 26 June 2024.

Troops were sent to seize the Plaza Murillo in La Paz, the country's capital city.

Bolivia is a deeply polarized country and has had 190 coups throughout its 200 years of history. Much of the discontent among members of the military is due to the country's economic inequality and widespread corruption.

The coup attempt was met with resistance from government forces and loyalist military units. Armored vehicles rammed the doors of the government palace, and a tank breached a government building.

The coup attempt was ultimately unsuccessful, and General Zúñiga was arrested. President Luis Arce condemned the coup attempt and called for unity in the country.
